Why Your Resume Template Matters

Recruiters spend an average of 6–7 seconds reviewing a resume before deciding whether to read it further. A clean, well-structured template ensures your most important information is visible immediately. The right template also passes Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) — automated software that screens resumes before a human ever sees them.

Types of Resume Formats

1. Chronological (Most Common)

Lists work experience in reverse chronological order (most recent first). Best for: candidates with a steady work history in the same field.

2. Functional

Leads with skills and accomplishments rather than work history. Best for: career changers, people returning to work after a gap, or new graduates with limited experience.

3. Combination (Hybrid)

Opens with a skills summary, then lists work experience chronologically. Best for: experienced professionals switching industries, or those with both strong skills and solid work history.

What Every Resume Must Include

  • Contact information: Full name, phone, professional email, LinkedIn URL, city/state (street address optional)
  • Summary or objective: 2–3 lines describing who you are and what you bring (optional but recommended)
  • Work experience: Job title, company, dates, and 3–5 bullet points per role using action verbs and quantified achievements
  • Education: Degree, institution, graduation year
  • Skills: Technical skills, tools, languages relevant to the target role

What to Leave Off Your Resume

  • Photo (in most Western countries — exceptions apply in some EU countries and Asia)
  • Age, date of birth, marital status (illegal to consider in hiring in the US)
  • "References available upon request" (assumed; wastes space)
  • Unrelated work experience older than 10–15 years
  • Spelling errors and passive language

Writing Strong Bullet Points

Use the CAR formula: Challenge → Action → Result. Start every bullet with a strong action verb. Quantify wherever possible.

  • Weak: "Responsible for managing social media."
  • Strong: "Grew Instagram following from 2,000 to 18,000 in 12 months by launching a daily short-form video strategy."

ATS Optimization Tips

Many large companies use ATS software to filter resumes before human review:

  • Use standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills) — not creative labels
  • Avoid tables, text boxes, graphics, and headers/footers — ATS often can't read them
  • Mirror keywords from the job description naturally throughout your resume
  • Submit as a .docx or PDF as specified in the job posting

Ideal Resume Length

One page for candidates with fewer than 10 years of experience. Two pages for senior professionals with extensive history. Never go to three pages unless you're in academia (use a CV instead). If you struggle to fit everything on one page, cut roles older than 10 years and trim bullet points to the three most impactful per role.
