When Should You Convert JPG to PNG?

Converting from JPG to PNG is useful when: you need a transparent background (JPG has no alpha channel support), you plan to edit the image and want to avoid further quality loss from re-saving as JPG, you need pixel-perfect screenshots or graphics with text (PNG's lossless compression preserves sharp edges), or a platform specifically requires PNG format.

Important: JPG to PNG Does Not Undo Compression

Converting a JPG to PNG does not recover the quality lost when the image was originally compressed as JPG. If a photo was saved at JPG quality 60% and you convert to PNG, you get a losslessly compressed copy of the already-degraded image — the artifacts are baked in. Always work from the highest-quality source you have.

File Size Considerations

PNG files are typically much larger than equivalent JPG files. A 500 KB JPG photo can become a 2–4 MB PNG. This is because PNG's lossless compression cannot achieve the dramatic size reductions that JPG's lossy compression can for photographic content. Only convert to PNG when the format features you need (transparency, lossless) are worth the larger file size.

Adding Transparency to a Converted PNG

Simply converting a JPG to PNG does not automatically add transparency — the white or colored background is preserved. To make a background transparent, you need to use a background remover tool after the conversion. Our image tools cover this workflow.

Batch JPG to PNG Conversion

If you have many JPG files to convert, look for a tool that supports batch processing. Uploading 50 files individually is impractical; a bulk converter processes all files simultaneously and delivers them in a zip archive.
