How to Make Text Bold, Italic, and Underlined on Social Media

Why You Can't Just Press Ctrl+B on Social Media

Most social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter/X, Facebook) don't support native text formatting — there's no bold, italic, or underline button. However, there's a clever trick: Unicode contains thousands of characters, including entire sets of bold, italic, and styled letters that look exactly like formatted text but are actually different characters.

How Unicode Bold Text Works

The regular letter "A" is Unicode character U+0041. The bold version "𝐀" is U+1D400. They look visually similar but are completely different characters. When you paste bold Unicode characters into Instagram or Twitter, the platform displays them as-is because it can't strip formatting from plain text characters.

Platform-by-Platform Formatting Guide

LinkedIn

LinkedIn actually supports native bold and italic through keyboard shortcuts in the post composer: Ctrl+B for bold, Ctrl+I for italic. This is real formatting, not Unicode tricks.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp has its own markdown-like formatting:

  • Bold: Wrap text with *asterisks* → *hello* = hello
  • Italic: Wrap text with _underscores_ → _hello_ = hello
  • Strikethrough: Wrap with ~tildes~ → ~hello~ = hello
  • Monospace: Wrap with triple-backticks

Slack and Discord

Both support markdown:

  • **Bold** or __bold__
  • *Italic* or _italic_
  • ~~strikethrough~~
  • backtick monospace backtick
  • Discord: ||spoiler||

Limitations of Unicode Text Styling

Unicode styled characters have drawbacks: screen readers for visually impaired users may read them oddly (𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨 might be read as "mathematical bold capital H, e, l, l, o"). They're also not searchable — someone searching for "Hello" won't find "𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨." Use them for style, not for important content that needs to be found or read accessibly.
