What Is Military Time?

Military time (also called the 24-hour clock) runs from 0000 to 2359, eliminating AM and PM. It's used by the military, hospitals, aviation, emergency services, and most countries outside the US. The advantage: no ambiguity — 1400 can only mean 2:00 PM, never 2:00 AM.

How to Read Military Time

  • Hours from 0100–1259 are the same as AM time (just remove the leading zero for midnight–noon).
  • For 1300 and beyond, subtract 1200 to get the PM time: 1400 − 1200 = 2:00 PM.
  • 0000 (or 2400) = midnight.
  • 1200 = noon.

Military Time with Minutes

Military time includes minutes directly after the hour digits. "1430" = 2:30 PM. "0715" = 7:15 AM. There's no colon in written military time, but it's spoken as "fourteen thirty" or "oh seven fifteen."

Quick Conversion Trick

  • AM hours (1 AM to 11 AM): Add a leading zero → 0100–1100
  • 12 PM (noon): 1200
  • PM hours (1 PM to 11 PM): Add 1200 → 1 PM = 1300, 11 PM = 2300
  • 12 AM (midnight): 0000

NATO Phonetic Alphabet for Time

In military communication, times are often stated clearly using the word "hours" — for example, "zero eight thirty hours" (0830) or "twenty-one hundred hours" (2100). This eliminates any possible misunderstanding over radio communications.
