What Is Screen Resolution?

Screen resolution refers to the number of pixels displayed on a screen, expressed as width × height. A resolution of 1920×1080 means 1,920 pixels wide and 1,080 pixels tall — totaling 2,073,600 pixels on your screen. Higher resolution means more pixels, which means sharper images and more content fits on screen.

How to Check Your Screen Resolution

Windows

  1. Right-click on the desktop and select "Display settings."
  2. Scroll to "Display resolution."
  3. Your current resolution is shown (e.g., 1920 × 1080).

Mac

  1. Go to Apple menu → System Preferences (or System Settings on macOS Ventura+).
  2. Click "Displays."
  3. Under Resolution, select "More Space" or "Larger Text" — or click "Scaled" to see specific values.

iPhone / Android

Go to Settings → Display. The resolution may be listed there. Alternatively, search "technical specifications" for your device model online — manufacturer spec pages list the exact display resolution.

Resolution vs. PPI (Pixels Per Inch)

Resolution alone doesn't tell the full picture. A 1920×1080 screen on a 24-inch monitor looks sharp. The same resolution on a 50-inch TV looks pixelated. What matters is PPI (pixels per inch) — how densely packed the pixels are. Higher PPI = sharper image. Apple's "Retina" displays aim for ~220 PPI or higher, making individual pixels invisible to the naked eye at normal viewing distance.

Does Resolution Affect Performance?

Yes — especially in gaming. Running games at 4K requires much more graphics processing power than 1080p. For the same hardware, dropping from 4K to 1080p can more than triple your frame rate. For everyday productivity use, resolution affects how much content fits on screen — a 4K monitor at 100% scaling shows nearly 4x as much content as a 1080p screen.
